The Shard vs the London Eye vs the Sky Garden

Three viewpoints, three quite different afternoons. Here is how they compare on the things that decide it: how high you get, what it costs, how long you can stay, and what you actually see.

Height and perspective
At 244 metres, The Shard's gallery is roughly 80 per cent higher than the top of the London Eye and around 90 metres above the Sky Garden. That changes what you see: from The Shard, London reads as a whole region running out to the North Downs. From the Eye, you are close enough to Westminster to pick out individual windows.
Price and value
The Sky Garden is free, which is unbeatable if the budget is tight — but slots are released in batches and go quickly, and the view is through glass on two sides. The London Eye costs about the same as The Shard for less than half the height and a fixed 30-minute rotation you cannot extend. The Shard starts at £28.50 booked ahead and lets you stay for as long as you like.
Time on the deck
This is the quiet difference. The Eye's rotation gives you a single lap, so you cannot wait out a passing cloud or stay for the lights. At The Shard you can arrive in daylight and leave after dark, which is why the sunset slot is such good value.
Which should you choose?
- First visit to London, want the big picture: The Shard.
- Travelling with young children, or short on time: the London Eye — the capsule is enclosed and the pace is gentle.
- No budget at all: the Sky Garden, booked as far ahead as you can.
- Photography: The Shard, for the open-air Level 72 with no glass.
